“We are confident Ptl. Dickens and K-9 Bane will have a positive impact in our community and surrounding communities,” Deputy Chief Philip Meehan said. K-9 Bane is partnered with Ptl. Robert Dickens, a three year veteran of the force.

The department tried to add a dog to its force last year, but budgetary constraints made it impossible. K-9 Bane was donated by Dr. Caesar DePaço and his wife Deanna Padovani-DePaço.

The DePaço’s are the founders, CEOs and presidents of the Summit K-9 Group, an organization that donates K-9s to police departments. Since their first donation in Hillsborough, the group has donated 30 K-9s to police departments across the county.

“Dr. DePaço and Deanna are passionate about dogs and true supporters of law enforcement,” Meehan said. “Their commitment to law enforcement, and specifically K-9 programs, is evident in the partnerships they have formed with agencies in need, kennels who supply the K-9’s and helping to establish the highest quality K-9 training centers.”

For their generosity, the DePaços were recognized at Tuesday’s ceremony with a proclamation from the Township and a plaque presented by the Holmdel Police Department.

MORRISTOWN 3— A Bernardsville couple who have donated K-9 police dogs to agencies around the United States were honored Wednesday by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office for donating dogs to two departments in New Jersey.

Dr. Caesar DePaço and his wife, Deanne Padovani-DePaço, were awarded a plaque and named honorary deputy sheriff by Morris County Sheriff Edward V. Rochford at the county’s K-9 facility for their contributions to the Deal Police Department and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit.

“The K-9 unit is spectacular,” Rochford said in front of a small gathering of officers from the sheriff’s office, Deal and Hillsborough, among others. “I admire them. They know I support them tremendously.”

Prior to presenting the DePaço family with a plaque, Sgt. Aaron Tomasini, who conducts hands on training with the K-9 dogs, expressed his gratitude.

“From deep down, (I am) very much appreciative,” he said, “to get these K-9 officers and help get them out in the public.”2

Dr. Caesar DePaço is the founder and CEO of Branchburg-based Summit Nutritionals International ®, a manufacturer of raw nutritional supplements. Deanne Padovani-DePaço is the President of the company. Together, they have both donated more than 13 dogs to agencies around the country, from Maryland to Oklahoma City.

In an interview earlier this year, Padovani-DePaço said she and her husband donated their first dog to the Hillsborough Police Department in 2013. After that, Padovani-DePaço said the feelings of gratitude and fulfillment became addicting.

“It feels super great to see the emotion and the reaction of the recipients of the dogs,” Padovani-DePaço said. “They are always so humble and grateful.”

On Wednesday morning, Padovani-DePaço echoed a similar sentiment.

“This is the least of the honor,” she said, as she held the plaque (Dr. Caesar DePaço was not present because he was in Florida, where he serves as the  Honorary Consul of Portugal in Palm Coast, Florida). “The honor is to assist the K-9 unit not only in this county but also in the nation…we’re so grateful to be a part of your team.”Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 7.21.42 PM

Along with the plaque, the DePaço’s were also named Honorary Deputy Sheriffs by Rochford, who quipped about the two using the title to their advantage when traveling across the country.

“When you’re doing 90 miles an hour in Arizona and you get stopped, tell them you’re with us,” he said.

Following the brief awards ceremony, Tomasini led a demonstration of how officers train and deploy K-9 units in the field. He said Morris County has 14 K-9 dogs in service with seven handlers. In all, K-9 units can be deployed to all 39 municipalities in Morris County, Tomasini said.

He said obedience is key with training the dogs.

“It’s just like a child,” he said. “If a child can (be taught to) listen, so can our dogs.”

Tomasini said the dogs in Morris County can handle an array of tasks in the field, from chasing down fleeing subjects to sniffing for explosives and narcotics.

4

He also touted the dogs’ abilities to go above and beyond what a human officer is capable of. Tomasini said K-9 dogs instill feelings of fear in a subject that a human cannot, and that their speed and agility is unparalleled to humans.

“Every time I come do an apprehension (with a K-9 dog), I win,” Tomasini said.

Bernardsville –1 A township couple is making a difference in the country one K-9 at a time.

Caesar DePaço, Ph.D. donated his first K-9 police dog, Kondro, to the Hillsborough Police Department in 2013. Two years later, he and his wife, Deanna Padovani-DePaço, have helped 13 dogs find homes in agencies around the country, including New Jersey.

“It became addicting and very gratifying to my husband to help these police departments,” Deanna Padovani-DePaço said Friday by phone. The couple were in the car returning from Virginia, where they helped departments in Roanoke and Harrisonburg acquire K-9 dogs.

“It feels super great to see the emotion and the reaction of the recipients of the dogs,” Padovani-DePaço said. “They are always so humble and grateful.”

Obtaining a K-9 police dog can be a large expense to a department, Padovani-DePaço said. Dogs cost around $10,000 each depending on their capabilities and training. It’s an expense Padovani-DePaço said some police departments cannot afford, especially when something unexpectedly happens to a K-9 dog.4

In Oklahoma City, Sgt. Ryan Stark’s K-9 partner, Kye, died after a man who ran from police stabbed him three times in August, according to a local media report. Five months later, Stark was back on the streets with his new dog, Kayne, thanks to the DePaço’s.

“It’s almost like a blessing, because they (police departments) don’t know where they would of obtained the funds or budgets to obtain a K-9,” Deanna Padovani-DePaço said.

Knowing that, the DePaço’s monitor the media and keep an eye on the Internet for any unfortunate news of a department in need of a K-9.

Just this Thursday, a police dog was shot dead in Southern California during a police standoff with a man barricaded in a residence. The dog, Sultan, entered the residence through a small crawlspace and sustained a life-ending gunshot inside the home, local media reports said.

The DePaço’s K-9 officer liaison, Hillsborough Township Police Officer Chris Engelhardt, already has a call out to the department to see if they need help replacing Sultan.3

“These people, they don’t have to do this,” said Engelhardt, who was the recipient of the DePaço’s first donated dog, Kondro. “This is their own money and it helps the townships out, especially in New Jersey. They go above and beyond what they have to do.”

Perhaps the DePaço’s generosity stems from their gratitude they have for the United States. Caesar DePaço is a product of the American Dream. A European citizen who came to the country 20 years ago, DePaço started Branchburg-based Summit Nutritionals International, a leader in manufacturing U.S.-made raw nutritional supplements.

A message on the company website sums up how DePaço feels about the United States.

“Caesar DePaço reminds us to … ‘ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,'” the words made famous by the late former President John F. Kennedy.

“He lives by and tries to fulfill it as best as possible,” Deanna Padovani-DePaço said.

Caesar DePaço always had a love for dogs and an admiration for law enforcement, his wife says. So in 2013, he donated the funds to help the Hillsborough Police Department acquire a new K-9 police dog after its former dog, Raider, retired from service.

Since then, the Deal Police Department in Monmouth County and the Morris County Sheriff’s Department have received dogs thanks to DePaço. Outside of New Jersey, the DePaço’s have helped agencies in Kansas City, Florida, Oklahoma City and Virginia.

The dogs all come from the same kennel in Denver, Ind., Vohne Liche Kennels. The kennel has a “prominent reputation” in the industry, Deanna Padovani-DePaço said. Owned and operated by a former Marine, Vohne Liche helps train dogs for the CIA and other government agencies, she said.2

Police departments contact Vohne Liche directly so they can provide a dog that fits every department’s specific needs, Padovani-DePaço said.

Caesar DePaço also donates bullet proof vests for the dogs — a cost of roughly $3,000 — and gift cards to Petco for food and other supplies. In total, each department receives a donation of around $13,000.

“They’re doing a lot of great things,” said Engelhardt, the Hillsborough officer. “And it’s non-stop work. They go out and meet these dogs, take out the families and trainers to a nice dinner.”

But to the DePaço family, this is just one way for them to give back — and hopefully motivate others to do the same.

“We’re very involved in the community and we’re trying to put a stamp on the nation and show people that it’s easy to help,” Deanna Padovani-DePaço said. “And we love to give back. There’s no catch.”

BERNARDSVILLE – Residents will have Summit Nutritionals International - Proud Sponsor of Taste of Bernardsvillean opportunity to sample cuisine from more than a dozen local restaurants, enjoy music and browse exhibits from various local vendors during the first “Taste of Bernardsville and Beyond’’ benefit event Thursday evening Oct. 17, at the Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge.

A fund-raiser for the Bernardsville Fire Company and First Aid Squad and Bernardsville Senior Citizens, the event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. It is being presented by the Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re very excited,’’ said Caesar Mistretta Sr., executive director of the chamber. “We’re pleased that we are totally booked as far as restaurants and vendors.

“It’s a taste, not a sit-down dinner,’’ he explained. “We’re happy that it’s a nice variety of food in addition to a great deal of desserts. And of the net proceeds will go the Bernardsville Fire Company and senior citizens.’’

“We have about 20 restaurants participating and about 15 vendors,’’ added Joseph Rossi, the chamber’s senior vice president. “We think it’s going to be a great start for a new event, a change of pace.’’

Participating restaurants provide the food free of charge as a way of showcasing their menus. The cost is $50 per person.

“One price covers all,’’ Rossi said. “Whatever the restaurants feel is their top of the line items.’’

Adult beverages will also be available for sale by the restaurant.

“The Olde Mill Inn is giving us their facility at a fraction of what it normally costs so they really are our lead benefactor,’’ Mistretta noted. “They are giving us not only the banquet hall but also the various other public places and exteriors of the hotel.’’

“The ambiance of the place is really gong to create the mood,’’ added Rossi. “It’s a beautiful complex.

“We’re happy for the support and the generosity of the restaurants, the sponsors and the vendors that have come forward to help raise money for these organizations,’’ he added.

Music will be provided by D-J Michael Spinnato from Eclipse Entertainment in Bernardsville.

For this year at least, the new event will replace the chamber’s annual Unity Day celebration, an outdoor benefit that has been held on the grounds surrounding the municipal pond. While Unity Day was always contingent on weather, the taste won’t have that problem, Mistretta noted.

The chamber has secured a number of sponsors for the event, including Summit Nutritionals International ®, the platinum sponsor, and Audi of Bernardsville, its gold sponsor. Mistretta said he expects the sponsorships will cover basic operating costs, with the focus now on ticket sales.
